My Story

Welcome to Childhood First's main donation page!

Childhood First is a charity dedicated to providing class-leading residential care and therapeutic education to 5-18-year-old children, 100% of whom have experienced severe abuse, neglect, and early life trauma. We have two homes in Norfolk and three homes and a school in Kent.

This Christmas, we are aiming to raise £80,000 for our Theatre Trips and Activities programme and all donations to this campaign will be doubled.

One of the main aspects of our therapeutic work with our children is helping them to think about and process their own life story. This can be incredibly painful and so approaching it indirectly, through telling other stories, is very useful. Theatre is a really immersive type of storytelling and a wide range of emotions and reactions are acted out for the children to recognize and relate to, helping to provide them with a reference point from which to contextualize how their own story can impact on their emotions.

Exposure to other arts and culture, such as dance, music, exhibitions, etc., is fantastic for helping the children see and learn about different ways to express themselves, think creatively and to consider different perspectives. This provides an arsenal of tools for regulation, managing feelings and building resilience.

Time away from the community can allow children and young people to reflect on and manage their behavioural and emotional difficulties in an unfamiliar environment. This is an important step in their healing journey.

Please consider donating and help us to continue to provide the children we look after with positive childhood memories!
